🇮🇳🌍 From Varanasi to Oslo: A Nobel for Law, Dignity and Peace

🇮🇳🌍 From Varanasi to Oslo: A Nobel for Law, Dignity and Peace

Warmest congratulations to Navi Pillay on receiving the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law.

Her recognition is a powerful affirmation of human rights, international justice, accountability and the rule of law. I had the privilege of meeting Navi Pillay during her tenure as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and presenting her my book on Dalit issues. Her journey—from confronting apartheid to defending human rights and advancing international justice—represents a powerful model of strength through law, dignity and accountability.

At the same time, I strongly protest Donald Trump’s reaction to the Nobel decision. His response, questioning the award and framing recognition through his own claim to status, reflects a troubling zero-sum politics of recognition: when another person is honoured, it is treated as a personal loss.

This is precisely where we must question cultures of hegemonic masculinity and domination—not as a judgment on men as a biological category, but as a socially constructed model in which dominance, control, toughness, status and superiority can become measures of political strength.

Democratic strength is different. It means accepting criticism, respecting independent institutions, acknowledging another person's achievement and understanding that another person's dignity does not diminish our own.

Navi Pillay represents this alternative conception of power: strength through accountability rather than domination; courage through law rather than force; leadership through the protection of others rather than the constant assertion of personal status.

From Varanasi to Bali, and from Bali to Oslo, the democratic question remains:

How can we transform power into participation, competition into cooperation, and recognition into responsibility?

Peace is not the triumph of the strongest person over everyone else.

Peace is the creation of a legal and moral order in which nobody needs to dominate in order to be respected.
