India should become by the end of the month the most populous country in the world, ahead of China, with nearly a billion and a half inhabitants. But how to feed all this population? Today, millions of Indians suffer from hunger.
It is an immense challenge that India will have to take up in the coming years: to be able to feed a population which is constantly increasing and which already numbers more than a billion people. With the same agricultural area, will the country be able to ensure its food self-sufficiency? In northern India, the breadbasket of the country, a producer smiles. His fields will give him a good harvest. "I produce 1,000 tons (...), it's a big production. The other farmers in the region produce as much, if not more than me ," he says.
1 in 5 inhabitants is malnourished today
The country led its green revolution in the 1960s. To put an end to the famines, India passed to an intensive and mechanized agriculture. Its yields have thus exploded. To produce more, India uses chemical fertilizers and pesticides but above all it needs to irrigate its land in large quantities. As a result, the water tables are emptied. One farmer thus had to pump deeper than usual. The country is destroying its environment and at the same time leaving hundreds of millions of Indians on the sidelines of its development. Almost one in five inhabitants is malnourished today.
