Empowering Women: A Holistic Approach to Change

On March 6, 2024, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, illuminated the spirit of International Women's Day with a grand seminar titled "Arohi 2024." The event, held at the esteemed Dhanwantari Hall in BHU, became a platform for profound discussions, insightful presentations, and heartfelt celebrations.

The inauguration of the seminar was graced by esteemed personalities who embody dedication to women's welfare and empowerment. Dr. Sunita Chandra, Registrar of the Institute of Tibetan Studies in Sarnath, along with Prof. Bipasha Goswami, Director of R.S. Banaras Law College, and Mrs. Shruti Nagvanshi, a distinguished social worker, illuminated the occasion with their presence. Also present were Senior Prof. H.H. Awasthi, Executive Body Chief of Ayurveda, and Prof. Vishvesh B.N., Head of the Department of Obstetrics, adding to the dignified aura of the event. Their collective presence symbolized a unified commitment to advancing women's rights and well-being.

At the heart of the seminar was the keynote address delivered by Dr. Mallika Tiwari, a revered figure in the academic realm as Professor and Head of Department at BHU. Dr. Tiwari shared profound insights on "Awareness of Cancer among Women," shedding light on crucial health concerns impacting women globally. Her address not only educated but also inspired the audience, sparking a deeper sense of awareness and advocacy.

Approximately 250 women doctors, research scholars, physicians, staff, and female students from the Department of Ayurveda actively participated in the seminar, reflecting a collective enthusiasm for women's empowerment. Their presence underscored the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where women can thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.

The seminar concluded with various cultural events and competitions, adding a touch of celebration to the day's proceedings. Amidst the jubilant atmosphere, Dr. Anuradha Roy extended heartfelt gratitude to all the guests on behalf of the organizers, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to making the event a success.

Furthermore, the seminar delved into a holistic approach to women's empowerment, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of empowerment beyond mere rhetoric. Prof. P.K. Goswami, Dean of the Faculty of Ayurveda at IMS, BHU, presided over discussions that explored dimensions such as political participation, asset base, marketing, credit, technology, skills, education and knowledge, health and nutrition, and water and sanitation. This comprehensive approach aimed to address the complex challenges hindering women's progress and pave the way for sustainable change.

Shruti Nagvanshi, a prominent social activist, emphasized the critical importance of dignity and opportunity in women's empowerment. She shed light on how patriarchy perpetuates democratic gaps and inflicts misery upon women, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change and collective action. Nagvanshi's impassioned statement underscored the imperative for women to support each other, ensuring that no woman is left behind in the journey towards equality and empowerment.

In essence, "Arohi 2024" served as more than just a seminar; it was a beacon of hope, empowerment, and solidarity for women across diverse spheres of life. As we commemorate International Women's Day, let us renew our commitment to creating a world where every woman can flourish, thrive, and lead with dignity and equality.
