Varanasi, a city known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant festivities, witnessed an unfortunate incident on Rang Bhari Ekadashi, the local customary fest before Holi. Several journalists covering the event were allegedly mishandled by senior police officials.
Pankaj Chaturvedi, the district correspondent of India News, shared his account of the incident, expressing dismay over the treatment meted out to the press. "We were there to cover the festivities and bring the vibrant culture of Varanasi to the public. Instead, we were pushed around and treated with disrespect by those who are supposed to maintain order and protect us," he stated.
In response to the incident, a written complaint was filed by the scribes to the Commissioner of Varanasi. The complaint detailed the mishandling and requested immediate action against the officials involved.
Adding to the call for justice, the People's Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) filed a petition to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on March 22, 2024, demanding accountability and better protection for journalists.
The office of the Police Commissioner of Varanasi has since conducted an investigation into the incident. Prompt action has been initiated against the officials responsible, signaling a commitment to uphold the rights of journalists and ensure their safety while performing their duties.
