Women Folk School on neo-dalit

http://www.mynews.in/News/women_folk_school_on_neo_dalit_campaign_N439118.html

Women Folk School on neo-dalit campaign against politics of division, exploitation and hatred with an alternative of unity of broken masses on base of reconciliation, democracy, secularism and non violence

Neodalit campaign that inculcated from synergetic culture of Varanasi reached from the villages of Varanasi to the other side of the world in Peru to observe March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. People lit up candle to support the campaign. At first candle was lighted by Deewai Rodriguez of Philippines and Elias Schmidt of Germany. Among the supporters of the Neodalits were working president of the World Buddha Association Rajbodh Kaul, dalit politician Uditraj, tribal leader Dayamani Barla, photographer Alessio Mammo, freelance filmmaker Joy Guha along with the people from the different communities.Marian Dass an NRI living in London has said we will observe in London. Congratulations for the launch of Neo Dalits movement. How secular & inclusive & a common platform for our people scattered and shattered in various faiths or no faith, various languages, regions etc.
700 people in 5 different blocks of Varanasi, at 70 places across India and in ten other countries people came out to support the neodalit campaign by participating in the programme.
In this context the PVCHR and Savitri Bai Phule Mahila Panchayat organized a debate on Neo-dalit campaign in context of gender perspective at the Pararkar Bhavan of Varanasi district on March 22. During the programme women folk school passed the Banaras declaration on Neo dalit Movement.
The programme started with the garlanding of the portrait of Savitri Bai Phule the first female teacher of India and lightening of the lamp by the chief guest Bindu singh and special guest Nasreen Fatima. At first in the programme poster against child marriage and sticker for violence free home and office were launched. During the programme Shirin Shabana Khan, Dr Lenin and Katyayini Singh spoke on the topics. The programme was convened by Shruti and Bindu Singh was the chief guest.

Speaking in the programme Shruti said that the society has been following the caste based and patriarchal system and even today it runs on the derivative of the same in shape of injustice or delayed justice (impunity). There are marginalized people in the villages who are victim of silence. These erroneous customs have been utilized by the powerful elite and un-accountable corporate now days to capture the culture, art, natural resources and even labour of the marginalized. Those who use influence to grab the rights of people employ religion and caste as tool to engage victims in to false fight and thereby establish their supremacy. There is only one alternative against politics of division based on hatred and that is unity of broken people.

What will be our strategy against politics of hatred, violence and exploitation? First unity is unity against caste system, a historical system of exclusion i.e. unity among the lower castes people that have been suppressed since centuries with the progressive anti-caste people born in upper caste. This will be first of its kind unity, which will not be against any person born in to upper caste communities neither against any religion.

Shirin Shabana Khan said that second unity is unity among minorities who suffered with communal fascism, those who believe in communal harmony and people with secular values against neo-fascism. Unity of all poor from all communities against the suffering with neo-liberal policy is the third kind of unity. Since those broken with different kinds of suppression and exclusion means dalit therefore these three kinds of unities is base of impart the neodalit movement.

Head of Gramya organization Bindu Singh said that this initiative will not be on the front of a political party but on a social level which will induce political parties to work for the people as neo dalit agenda.

Nasreen Fatima from Lucknow said that women are making an appeal today that all progressive people with Dalit and OBCs should unity against caste system, secular people and Minorities should unite against communal fascism and poor should unite and participate in the neo-dalit Movement. They should take people from the path of justice, fraternity, rule of law and non-violence to a people's movement only then will the society specially the women will be free from torture and atrocities.

Without the participation of the women there can be no sustainable stand against injustice, exploitation, atrocity, inhuman acts and communalism. The Banaras declaration in support of Neo-dalit movement was translated in to several languages and programme for debate and support were organized.

http://visfot.com/home/index.php/permalink/6030.html

Keep Jeju for Peace : Gwangju Prize Winners

Statement of Gwangju Prize Laureates Against Navy Base on World Peace Island Jeju

We Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Laureates remember Jeju Island in Korea as a peaceful island with beautiful scenery and tragic history. These days, however, the tearful crying of Jeju is echoing in our ears caused by explosive blasting for construction of a navy base at Gangjeong village.

In the last few days, explosive blasting of the unique Gureombi laval-rock formation has started. A heavy contingent of police has been deployed once again against the Gangjeong villagers and their supporters.

Most seriously, people who hope the Island remain peaceful have been arrested or taken to the police including one who is currently undertaking his more than 30 days of fasting while in prison and vowed to give his life if the Gureombi rock is destroyed and the construction of the navy base not stopped.

Jeju, a Global Biosphere Reserve, is a beautiful island having three UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites and nine UNESCO Geo-Parks. The Island is formally declared the "World Peace Island" by the Jeju Peace Declaration at the Jeju Peace Forum in 2001 and should indeed be an island for promoting the purpose of world peace with its strategic location at the heart of East Asia (between Japan, China and Korea, with Russia and USA also interested parties). Construction of the navy base would only serve to further the military tensions and obstacles to world peace in the East Asian region and between the countries involved.

We, therefore, urge the Korean government to stop the construction of the navy base and promptly release the prisoners regarding this matter.

MINORITIES IN SOUTH ASIA

Pritam K. Rohila, Ph. D.

Most minorities in South Asia are relatively poor and quite marginalized. Situation in some nations has worsened since fundamentalists gained access to state power and influence over government policies.

Minority people are often demonized and persecuted in most South Asian countries. They face discrimination at workplaces, educational institutions and neighborhoods.  They are denied equal protection of law, and some laws are used unfairly to humiliate and terrorize them.

In some South Asian nations, they have been subjected to communal riots from time to time. In others, they also get kidnapped for ransom, shot to death, or burnt alive; their places of worship are attacked, and their property usurped. And if that were not enough, their women are gang-raped, forcibly converted to the offenders' religion, and married to the perpetrators or sold away.

Plagued by a sense of uncertainty and insecurity, they are forced to live in ghettos, or seek refuge in other countries.

Governments are indifferent to the plight of minorities, and the civil society seems unwilling to intervene.

They fail to realize that, as some authorities have pointed out, "the struggle for the rights of the minorities should be integral to the struggle for democratization, secularization and for social justice."

No nation can realize its full potential, without also safeguarding the right of minorities to enjoy their own culture, to profess and practice their own religion, or to use their own language.

Uttar Pradesh: Dalit-based party loses 'untouchable' vote in state elections

Uttar Pradesh: Dalit-based party loses 'untouchable' vote in state elections
by Nirmala Carvalho
For human rights activist Lenin Raghuvanshi, the defeat was expected. Socialist populist Samajwadi Party wins an absolute majority of seats. Rahul Gandhi's Congress party loses. Outgoing chief minister never fought to eliminate caste system.

Mumbai (AsiaNews) - The Samajwadi Party (SP), a populist socialist party, won the elections in Uttar Pradesh, taking 224 seats out of 403. After four years in office, Mayawati and her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), a Dalit-based party, lost power in India's most populous state (more than 200 million) winning only 79 seats. For Lenin Raghuvanshi, director of the Varanasi-based People's Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), the defeat was expected because Mayawati moved away from her party's programme based on social justice. At the same time, Rahul Gandhi, son of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi, failed to win the state back for the Indian National Congress (INC), which it had lost in 2007. The Hindu ultranationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did even better than Congress, taking 47 seats against 37 for the INC. However, the BSP was the greatest loser.
"At the very beginning of her term as Chief Minister, Mayawati worked towards social engineering," refusing "progressive elements so necessary to eliminate the caste system." Instead, she "collaborated with some upper caste" elements, distancing herself "from the very people she was supposed to defend. She played the democratic game only for her own profit."
Other factors also contributed to her loss of Dalit support, such as the private use of public funds earmarked for the poor and the marginalised, widespread corruption and the sense of impunity enjoyed by her party.
"The lower castes are tired of this impunity," Raghuvanshi said. "Elections results in Uttar Pradesh show a new trend based on a neo-Dalit movement."
"Dalits are broken people, but they are not alone. There are three such groups: Dalits broken by the caste system, minorities (Christians and Muslims) broken by Hindu ultranationalists, and the poor and the unemployed, broken by neo-liberal economic policies."
"The neo-Dalit movement wants to end the culture of impunity based on violence, corruption and indifference towards the weakest."
"India's many problems are interconnected," the PVCHR director explained. "In order to understand and solve them, they must not be divided. What is needed is a comprehensive approach that takes into account economic, political and social factors."

Appeal of Women leaders for Neo-Dalit Movement

Women leaders appeal for Neo -Dalit movement

UP election and debate of neo-dalit movement

Ben Deboc of Belgium writes in July 2011,"The risk is that see them takes some distance with the people that they are supposed to defender or, worst, playing the democratic game only for their own profit – as Mayawati Kumari (BSP Dalit leader) who made hidden alliance with RSS (Dalit – Brahmin social engineering, not attacks against caste system) because she expect to run for prime minister election. Another way seems to be preferable." Please see trend of result in election of UP.No alternative, please join Neo-dalit movement:

Indian regional polls to test public mood

Dalits, or untouchables, in country's most populous state place little faith in government to improve their lot.

Millions of people will head to the polls in India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, to vote for provincial representatives on Wednesday.
The elections are seen as an indicator of public sentiment about the government, but many voters, especially those known as the Dalits or "untouchables", do not have much trust in government to better their living conditions.
Those voters are unhappy about the prospects for receiving benefits they had been promised in previous elections.

From ground of Varanasi:an emerging feminist voice

The women center named after Savitri Bai Phule[i]. She was the first female teacher of the first women's school in India and in 1852 she opened a school for untouchable girls.
The Savitri Bai Phule Woman Centre was built to provide shelter and psycho –legal support to the women of police torture, domestic violence and other kind of harassment and violence based on gender and caste.
The centre was formally inaugurated by Ms. Helma Ritscher, Chairperson, Indo – German Society of Remscheid and Dr. Mahendra Pratap, famous historian and President of PVCHR on 28 February, 2012 in Baghwanala, Varanasi.
The initiative started after the donation of land by Ms. Urmila Singh (mother of Ms. Shruti Nagvanshi) and with the financial support from German Ministry NRW via GIZ GmbH, Indo – German Society of Remscheid, Germany and Jan Mitra Nyas.
The center consists of four rooms –one room for shelter, one room for warden cum care taker and one office room as place for testimonial therapy, one store room, lobby and two latrines and bathrooms, one kitchen and one porch. Jan Mitra Nyas supported for the boring to get fresh water on the land of building. It will also provide water to the poor people living nearby the center during the summer reason (when there is scarcity of water).
After the inauguration ceremony a small program held in Raja Suhail Dev Jan Mitra Kendra where children played the skit on "Sab Padhe aur Sab Badhe" (Education to all and development of all). Ms. Nikhat Khan was honoured with Jan Mitra Award (Peoples' Friendly Award) for providing the education to her girls with her hard work. Same day PVCHR new brochure prepared by two German travellers Mr. Elias – Kilian –Schmidt and Sarah Busching was inaugurated. Scholarship scheme under "Helma Ritscher education – Scholarship" was launched as a permanent and continuous initiative for education as opportunity to marginalized children and youths. 22 girls were selected for the year 2012 – 13 with the support of Rajdulari Foundation of Sweden and Ms.Parul Sharma. Around 250 people participated in the program including Ken Opprann[ii], a photographer from Norway.
The shelter rooms will be used for the women who need to stay for the legal proceeding (medico –legal, writ petition). Prevail and emanate from the traditional culture or male supremacy most of the women suffer directly or indirectly by existing patriarchal structure of the society. The police attitudes that domestic violence is primarily of private nature is trivializing of grave social evil that too much psychological traumatize and they need the short home to stay.
PVCHR together with the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims (RCT) will provide psychological support through testimonial therapy and will provide help to the survivors through emergency assistance. As the therapy required lonely and secure place.

There is Government protection house in the city only after the order by magistrate in legal cases, not for all women faced violence and threat. The Government protection house is overcrowded, facing corruption, discrimination and most of the women are not willing to live there.

But our centre is an unique in surrounding five districts as here women have place for short – stay up to one year according to their wish and settlement of cases. Women have portability of psychological support by testimonial support, legal and social support with security.
