CBI probe demanded in death of witness
Sep 15, 2010, 10.52PM IST TNN

VARANASI: Though the city police closed the chapter on Naresh Gupta's mysterious death by terming it as a suicide case, the episode continues to attract speculations as the nexus of criminal gangs and police had already been exposed by Gupta before his death.

Gupta, a native of Lehartara, was the prime witness against mafia don Munna Bajrangi in Laxman Seth murder case that took place in 2002. Before becoming the witness in this murder case, Gupta was already being victimised by the same gang as his father and a brother had also been murdered in 1995 and 1996 by the shooters of Bajrangi. Gupta continued to run from pillar to post to ensure a proper security cover for himself. After Bajrangi was produced before the court for the hearing in Laxman Seth murder case, Gupta again made a plea for security. But, on August 18, he was found hanging with the ceiling fan in his room with the doors lying open.

Before his mysterious death, Gupta had witnessed crucial situations. Records compiled by the Peoples Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), an NGO, revealed how he suffered at the hands of the mafia don. In its letters forwarded to the President, Prime Minister and the National Human Rights Commission for a CBI probe into the mysterious death of Gupta, PVCHR also attached the copies of the directives issued by the NHRC and the PM office to the state government and the district police for providing security to Gupta. However, no security cover was provided to him.

Before his death, Gupta had also exposed the nexus between the criminal gang and the police. In his testimony, compiled by the PVCHR before his death, Gupta had revealed that in 2007, the then station officer of Manduadih police station had tried to dissuade him from becoming a witness against Bajrangi. But, Gupta remained firm on his stand and was sent to jail 'mistakenly' in a case under Arms Act that was lodged against some other Naresh of Shivdaspur. Gupta had to arrange for guarantors to come out of the jail after seeking bail from court after 19 days of arrest. After coming out of the jail, he took shelter of the court. Taking a serious note of his complaint, the then additional sessions judge of fast track court-IV, MP Chawdhary, ordered the then DIG, Varanasi Range, Dinesh Chandra Vashisth to probe into the matter.

The records available at the police office also revealed that during the probe of senior officials, the allegation of Gupta was found to be correct. However, when the time for punishing the guilty policemen of Manduadih police station came, the station officer's name was removed and 15 days salary of only a sub-inspector and three other policemen was deducted. According to PVCHR, before his death, Gupta had also taken shelter of the Allahabad high court against the role of the police. He said the way Gupta died was a complete mystery that should be solved by a CBI probe only.
